What will I need to start?

This is a course for experienced HR professionals, so you will need previous formal qualifications to get started. 

You’ll need: 

  • Some HR experience with an interest in developing to management level
  • Basic computer skills and access to a phone/tablet/laptop with internet 
  • A solid grasp of the English language (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent if English is not your first language) 
  • You must be over the age of 18 or have a third-party payee for any financial agreement
  • A CIPD Foundation qualification or a relevant Level 3 (or higher) qualification

Here are the 8 units you’ll cover, and what you’ll be able to do by the end of each one:

Unit 1: Developing professional practice

Review how to be an effective and efficient HR professional. Understand how to apply CPD techniques to construct, implement and review a personal development plan.

Unit 2: Business issues and the context of HR

Understand key business issues and main external factors affecting different organisations and the impact on HR. Review how organisational and HR strategies and practices are shaped and developed. Know how to identify and respond to changes in the business environment.

Unit 3: Resourcing and talent planning

Understand key labour market trends and their significance for workforce planning. Learn how to undertake talent planning and recruitment activities and how to maximise employee retention. Manage dismissal, redundancy and retirement effectively and lawfully

Unit 4: Using information in HR

Understand the research process and different research approaches. Know how to conduct a critical review of information sources in an area of HR/business practice and analyse the findings, draw meaningful conclusions and evaluate options for change. Learn how to deliver clear, business-focused reports on an HR issue.

Unit 5: Managing and coordinating the Human Resources function

Review the purpose and key objectives of the HR function in organisations. Understand how HR objectives are delivered in different organisations and how the HR function can be evaluated in terms of value added and organisation performance. And finally understand the relationship between organisational performance and effective HR management and development.

Unit 6: Employment law

Understand the purpose of employment regulation and the way it is enforced in practice. Know lawfully how to manage recruitment and selection activities, how to manage change and reorganisation, how to manage issues relating to pay and working time and how to manage performance and disciplinary matters. Finally learn how to ensure that staff are treated lawfully when they are at work.

Unit 7: Developing Leadership & Management Skills

Understand the differences between leadership and management. Learn the key roles of corporate leaders and managers, leadership & management development interventions, and the learning & development function. Review several different approaches to developing leaders and managers. Understand how to ensure the ownership and success of leadership and management development programmes.

Unit 8: Employee Engagement

Understand the concepts and components of employee engagement. Be able to explain how employee engagement contributes to positive business outcomes. Understand the principles and applications of high-performance working (HPW). Know how to raise employee engagement levels using HR strategies and practices.

How will I be assessed?

Each unit will take around 4-6 weeks to complete. At the end of each unit you will need to submit an assessment online which will be marked by your tutor. Each assessment will be tailored to the content of the unit.
