Digital Marketing

Wigan Borough Community Partnership is here for the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector and its volunteers of Wigan Borough. Providing advice, training and support in maintaining or setting up community groups and organisations across the Wigan Borough.

We provide coordinated capacity building that allows the local community and voluntary sector to deliver on social care, health and well-being, family support and social mobility, leisure and culture.

Key to delivering our aims is supporting communities and individuals within communities to connect. In partnership with Wigan Council and Inform People we have developed a tool to help us to do this – Community Book (

Community Book is an online tool that has been developed for the Wigan Borough, it connects people to the wealth of local organisations, events and volunteering opportunities that are available.

To ensure the full benefit of this resource is used, we are looking for a Digital / Social Media apprentice to work with local VCSE organisations to develop their online presence and fully utilise Community Book and other social media platforms. The Digital / Social Media Apprentice will also help Wigan Borough Community Partnership to maintain an active social media presence.

The focus of this role is to gain understanding and experience in digital marketing (e.g. social media, email marketing, keyword advertising, testing, and analytics); and help showcase the impact / benefits of effective marketing.

 Main Responsibilities
  • Assisting in the research and creation of written content for Community Book and for WBCP’s websites and social media channels.
  • Taking photographs and assisting in the production of videos for local VCSE organisation Community Book page, websites and social media channels.
  • Monitoring the web for the latest trends in digital marketing and social media and suggesting how they could be used by WBCP and other local VCSE organisations.
  • Tracking/analysis of progress and producing data for organisational reports.
  • Accessing Google Analytics to help determine success of all the above in terms of conversion rate analysis.
  • Developing a monthly Community Book Bulletin to promote forthcoming highlights / trends and communicate updates.
  • Helping out with admin tasks such as the filing of photographs and videos, and the maintenance of website content.
  • Working to agreed timescales.
Other Duties
  • To sometimes undertake general reception duties, answering calls, and meeting and greeting visitors.
  • To respond to enquiries via telephone, email, in person, and through digital media.
  • To attend events when necessary, acting as an ambassador for WBCP and Community Book.
  • To have a commitment to policies and procedures.

Person Specification

This post requires an outstanding, well-organised individual with excellent customer service, time keeping and administration skills. The post holder will be comfortable with operating in a dynamic and ever-changing working environment.

Education & qualifications

There are no formal qualifications required for this position but qualifications in English, journalism, media studies or similar would be advantageous, as would previous experience in digital media.

Knowledge & skills:

Essential: The ability to write, edit and fact-check copy. Knowledge of and proficiency in using social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, and Microsoft Office software.

Desirable: Skills in digital SLR photography and filmmaking. Knowledge of and proficiency in using Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Pro, and any website content management systems.

Operational environment:

Some of the work will be office-based, but the successful applicant would also spend lots of time  travelling to visit local organisations within the Wigan borough so would need to be able to do so by either using public transport of their own vehicle.

The Apprenticeship: 
The apprenticeship will involve 4 days per week at work, with up to 1 day per week spent training. Upon completion you’ll have a Level 3 Digital Marketing Apprenticeship.

37 hours per week, this post will occasionally involve some weekend and evening work. Time will be granted to support study of up to 1 day per week.
