What does CIPD stand for, and what is it?

CIPD stands for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. It is the professional body for people working in Human Resources (HR) and Learning & Development (L&D). With more than 160,000 members worldwide, the CIPD sets industry standards and offers respected qualifications that help you build a successful career in people practice.

Is a CIPD qualification worth it?

Yes. A CIPD qualification is highly regarded by employers and often essential for many HR and L&D roles. It helps you develop recognised skills, improves your employability, and can support progression into more senior positions. Completing a CIPD course also makes you eligible for CIPD professional membership, which enhances your credibility.

What are the different CIPD qualification levels?

There are three main levels:

  • Level 3 – Foundation Certificate in People Practice
Ideal for beginners and equivalent to A-level standard.
  • Level 5 – Associate Diploma in People Management or Organisational Learning & Development
A more advanced qualification at undergraduate level for those with some experience.
  • Level 7 – Advanced Diploma in Strategic People Management
A postgraduate-level qualification for experienced practitioners looking to step into senior or strategic roles.

Are CIPD qualifications recognised internationally?

Yes. CIPD qualifications are respected by employers around the world and demonstrate that you meet internationally benchmarked professional standards in HR or L&D.

What CIPD courses can I study with Avado?

Avado offers fully online CIPD-accredited courses at:

  • Level 3 Foundation Certificate in People Practice
  • Level 5 Associate Diploma in People Management
  • Level 5 Associate Diploma in Organisational Learning & Development
  • Level 7 Advanced Diploma in Strategic People Management

Each course includes guided online learning, tutor support, and access to Avado’s award-winning virtual campus.

Which CIPD level is right for me?

  • Choose Level 3 if you are completely new to HR or L&D.
  • Choose Level 5 if you have some experience or previous relevant study.
  • Choose Level 7 if you are an experienced practitioner aiming for a strategic or senior role.

You can start at the level that best matches your experience and goals.

Can I start at Level 5 without completing Level 3?

Yes. You do not need to complete Level 3 before Level 5. Many learners begin directly at Level 5 if they have relevant experience or academic background.

What is the difference between HR (People Management) and L&D?

  • HR / People Management focuses on managing the employee lifecycle – recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, performance, and policy.
  • L&D / Organisational Learning & Development focuses on developing people – designing training, building capability, and supporting learning culture.

Choose the route that aligns with your preferred career path.

What roles can I progress to with a CIPD qualification?

Examples include:

  • Level 3: HR Assistant, HR Administrator, L&D Coordinator
  • Level 5: HR Advisor, HR Business Partner, L&D Manager
  • Level 7: HR Director, Head of People, Talent Manager, Senior L&D Consultant

  • Level 3: around 6–8 hours per week
  • Level 5: around 8–10 hours per week
  • Level 7: around 10–15 hours per week

You can study in the evenings, at weekends, or whenever suits your schedule.

How long does a CIPD course take?

Typical completion times are:

  • Level 3: approximately 8 months
  • Level 5: approximately 10 months
  • Level 7: approximately 18–20 months

Durations may vary depending on your pace and commitments.

How will I be assessed? Are there exams?

There are no exams.
CIPD qualifications are assessed through written assignments, case studies, and practical tasks submitted online. Your tutor will guide you through what is required for each unit.

Do I need a degree or previous experience to enrol?

No. You do not need a degree to start a CIPD course. Level 3 is open to complete beginners. For Levels 5 and 7, some relevant experience or prior study is recommended but not strictly required.

Do I need to become a CIPD member?

Yes. CIPD requires all learners to register as Student Members when starting a qualification. Avado will help guide you through the membership process. Membership fees are paid directly to the CIPD.

How do I enrol, and when can I start?

You can enrol online or speak with one of Avado’s learning advisers. New cohorts start frequently throughout the year, so you can choose a start date that works for you. Once enrolled, you’ll receive access to the online campus and your welcome information.
